Lenten Donation Drive

Our Lenten Donation Drive this year supports our mission partner Maternity Care Coalition. We are collecting donations of baby wipes, boxes of diapers of all sizes, and baby formula. Donations can be dropped off at designated locations in the sanctuary and Old Buttonwood Hall. During the season of Lent, the Missions Committee is sponsoring a drive to support Philly House, a shelter for men that provides temporary housing and comprehensive services to support transitions to long-term housing.

The donation drive will run from February 18 through April 7.

Items to donate are listed below. Donations can be dropped off in designated locations at the church. Items may also be purchased online from the Amazon Wishlist. (Amazon Wish List items will be shipped directly to Philly House.)

Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Opportunity

Habitat for Humanity needs your help for the grand opening of a new ReStore at 3111 W Allegheny Avenue on Friday, June 23 and Saturday, June, 24.  Volunteers are needed this week to help prepare for the opening.  Volunteers should be at least 16 years of age; please wear closed-toed shoes and clothing you don’t mind getting dirty.  There is plenty of parking available!  Shifts are available every day, June 17 through June 24!  To sign up please contact Amazjah Grant, Volunteer Coordinator (215-309-7273, ext 73).  You can sign up for a whole shift or a couple of hours. Any help is greatly appreciated!

During the season of Lent, the Missions Committee sponsoring a drive to support St. Barnabas Community Resource center, which is managed through our mission partner Episcopal Community Services (ECS). This community resource center supports individuals and families living in West Philadelphia through an open pantry program and rapid re-housing program.

The donation drive will run from March 19 through April 30.

Items to donate are listed below. Donations can be dropped off in a designated location at the church. Items may also be purchased online from the registry list at Target or wishlist at Amazon. Target and Amazon Wish List items will be shipped to the church's address.

Advent Donation Drive

During the Advent season, the Missions Committee has organized a clothing drive to support some of our mission partners, including Maternity Care Coalition, Philly House, Gemma Services, University City Hospitality Coalition, and Episcopal Community Services (ECS) Mission Meals and Market. It will run through January 8; donation bins are in the sanctuary and Old Buttonwood Hall. You may also send your donations to the church. We are asking the congregation to bring in brand new socks, tee-shirts, underwear of all sizes, including infants, children, women, and men. Please visit the Target Registry or Amazon Wishlist for a suggested list of donations.

Other volunteer opportunities for this season:

  • Accommodations for patients: Hosts for Hospitals is looking for people to accommodate patients and their families who are staying in the Philadelphia area. They are seeking those who have space in their homes or second properties so patients and their families can stay in the area while they are being treated. Please, visit the Hosts for Hospitals website if you are interested in hosting.

  • Volunteer opportunities for Zia: This non-profit organization, which serves low-income families in the city, has its food pantry at FPCP.

  • Volunteers are needed to drop-off meals. For more information, visit the website ziafood.org to sign up directly.

  • To provide in-kind donations, please visit their Amazon wish list.

During the season of Lent, the Missions Committee sponsoring a drive to support three mission partners: Maternity Care Coalition, Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission, and Urban Tree Connection.

The donation drive will run from March 6 through April 10. The items are much-needed supplies for these organization to help them support surrounding communities. Donations can be dropped off in a designated location at the church or can be donated online through SignUpGenius.

How to Participate: You may purchase item from the list (see below) and bring them to church, or purchase items online to have them delivered to the church:

  1. Sign Up.  View the list of items on SignUpGenius; sign up for the items you will donate so we know about how many items to expect. Items listed are on a registry list at Target or wishlist at Amazon that can be purchased. (Links are provided on the SignUpGenius list, or click on the links below to purchase from Target or Amazon.)

  2. Purchase Item(s). Purchase items from the registry list at Target or wishlist at Amazon. The Target and Amazon Wish List items will be shipped to the church's address. If you purchase an item that is not on the Target or Amazon wish list, you may have the item shipped to First Presbyterian Church, or bring it to church with you on a Sunday.

  3. Meet the Deadline: Sign up by Sunday April 10; you only need to provide your name and email to sign up!

Urban Mosaic Back-to-School Initiative and Culture Exchange

First Church mission partner Urban Mosaic just launched a Back-to-School initiative as students in Mexico return to in-person classes. As a kick-off to this initiative, UM is hosting a “Zoom In: Kids and Culture Exchange” gathering on September 11 at 11:30 AM. The event is for girls and boys ages 5-10ish (and their families) who are curious to learn what it’s like to go to school in another country. We will have several kids and their moms from communities where we serve on the Zoom call, and will do some fun cultural exchange/language exchange activities. Diaper & Wipes Drive

Diaper & Wipes Drive for Maternity Care Coalition

First Church will be collecting diapers and wipes to donate to MCC from February 2 through February 23 to support the Maternity Care Coalition. All sizes of diapers are needed, though smaller sizes (N, 1, and 2 in many brands) are especially appreciated. Diapers can also be out of their original packaging, so if your child has outgrown a partial box of diapers please feel free to bring it in. Donations can be left in marked bins in Old Buttonwood Hall.

Maternity Care Coalition (MCC) is a Philadelphia-based non-profit that was founded forty years ago to combat infant mortality, which is much higher in Philadelphia than the national average, and much more likely to impact minority communities. MCC’s mission is to improve the health and well-being of pregnant women and parenting families, and to enhance school readiness for children under 3 years of age. MCC conducts 11 different programs and has helped over 135,000 women, babies, and families since its founding.

Field Trip to the Arc

Everyone is invited to join us on a field trip to The Arc of Philadelphia to learn more about our Mission Partner.  We’ll meet at the church at 10:45 am, leaving by 11 am for the 20-minute drive to The Arc at 2350 West Westmoreland Avenue.  We’ll take a tour led by Joe Mancini, Executive Director, followed by lunch.  We plan to be back at First Church no later than 2:30 pm.  The trip is a great opportunity for education, inspiration, and fellowship!  Please RSVP to missions@fpcphila.org.

Join a Mission Trip to Mexico City!

Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church has invited congregants of First Church to a joint mission trip to the most vulnerable communities of Mexico City from October 12 - 19, 2019. We would be working with Urban Mosaic, an organization our church has supported for a number of years, and to which we have sent mission volunteers in the past few years. Working with the people in their communities is an amazing experience. On this trip we will be doing light construction work to build up their communities, and helping to organize health-care centers. We need to set a team by September 7. Christian Ed: Focus on Missions

On January 27th, our Adult CE class will be led by Tommy Campbell, Director of Kirkwood Camp, a long-time missions partner of First Church.  Kirkwood is a joint camping ministry of the Lehigh and Philadelphia Presbyteries.  Its mission is to strengthen the church of Jesus Christ by enabling children, youth, families and adults to begin or deepen their experience of God in the context of nature and a caring Christian community centered on the Word of God.  Please join us in the MacColl room.
